Bamboo Fiber Linen

Bamboo Fiber

BambooPlant fibers are elongated thick-walled cells that give strength and support to tissue in vascular plants. When manufacturing bamboo fiber products, the fibers are combed out and spun into yarn, just as flax or hemp is manufactured. Flax comes in bundles under the bark of the Linum usitatissimum plant, and is first retted, then broken, scutched and combed. Hemp, cultivated from the inner bark of Cannabis sativa is retted, separated and pounded.

Bamboo fiber is environmentally friendly  because it is extremely quick to grow, reaches maturity quickly, and does not require replanting as its vast root network continually sprouts new shoots.

Bamboo has become a popular material in the fashion industry because of its luxurious softnewss, flowing and gentle drape and low price (compared with similar materials such as cashmere and silk). It also has the benefit of being the world’s most renewable resource and therefore incredible sustainable.

Bamboo Linen

Bamboo Bed LinenEttitude produces eco-friendly baby clothing, laundry products, towels and linen that are unique, low allergenic, and save you money through being efficient. Ettitude’s bed linenis made of bamboo fiber that has a luxurious and comfortable feel, and comes in a variety of colours (red, cream, sand, etc). The bamboo fiber makes the linen breathable, antifungal and antibacterial, very durable, odor resistant and highly absorbent (up to 60% more than normal cotton). From quilt covers to  pillow cases, sheets and towels, these sets have a 300 thread count with 70% bamboo and 30% cotton blended fabric.

Ettitude’s towels are also made from pure natural bamboo fiber. This makes them ultra soft and highly absorbent. Since bamboo is naturally antibacterial the towels will stay fresher for longer. When washed they will fluff up and have a beautiful sheen. No bleach or fabric softener are needed. Bamboo has soil releasing properties that make bleach unnecessary.

Eco-Friendly Textiles

Textile Production

Organic cottonCotton is one of the world’s largest textile industries. Textile manufacturing involves the conversion of fibre into yarn, then fabric, then textiles which are then made into clothing or other products. There are five stages in the manufacturing of cotton: cultivating and harvesting, preparatory processes, spinning, weaving, and finishing. Cotton requires intensive farming, so involves large amounts of fertilisers and pesticides, and up to a quarter of the world’s insecticide use. It also has a very high water and energy consumption as a result of going through processes such as bleaching, washing, rinsing, dyeing, printing and finishing.

Eco-friendly textiles, such as organic cotton, wool, yak down, bamboo fibre, hemp, flax, silk and jute, are different to conventionally processed textiles because they are:

a) Renewable resources

b) Grown without pesticides, antibacterials, synthetic fertilisers, fungicides, or genetic modification

c) Cultivated on chemical-free land

d) Processed without being dyed, bleached or treated with other toxic chemicals

e) Biodegradable.

Apart from being eco-friendly, organic textiles are also child and baby friendly. Children are more sensitive and vulnerable to toxins whether ingested as a result of pesticide drift or contaminated water, or absorbed through their skin. Children having thinner and more porous skin, and less melanin to protect it from external irritants. So it is important to expose your child to as little harmful substances as possible, so their development is not affected.
